When people refurbish their bathrooms, radiators are often overlooked.

They spend money on the right bath and sink and dither over taps and accessories but what about the bathroom radiator?

There is more to heating a bathroom than a towel rail, designer radiators can now be found in all different shapes and sizes.

The creation process involved in making a designer radiator means there are effectively two completely different worlds colliding – art and engineering.

If you have seen some of the designer radiators over at the main Radiator Gallery site, you will know exactly what we mean; beautiful and outrageous design blending perfectly with working mechanics.

I wonder what goes on in the mind of a designer radiator creator.

Design: Beginning with nothing to create something beautiful.

Exploration: Explore and express an inner thought in an outward show of extravagance.

Statement: Be as bold and daring as you can to unearth hidden gems.

The Only Way Is Essex

We’ve been delighted to see some cast members of hit show The Only Way Is Essex eyeing up our designer radiators.

Stars of the reality show regularly stroll past our gallery as the production’s filmed in and around our area.

Seeing them looking at our radiator which features work by street artist Banksy, made us wonder if they’d like a personal radiator with a picture of them on?

Who would you like to see on your very own central heating sysyem? Maybe Mark Wright or his girlfiend Lauren? Alternatively you could go for up and coming DJ Lauren Pope or her ex Kirk Norcross?

Craighaar Hotel Installs Designer Radiators

When The Craighaar Hotel in Aberdeen decided to refurbish their accommodation, even the radiators got changed.  In this interview the hotel’s Regional Manager, Arlene Wilson outlines why they purchased designer radiators from The Radiator Gallery and how the new central heating system proved a winner with guests.

Why did the Craighaar Hotel look to get designer radiators?

We need to keep up with the competition in the area. We need to offer some differential to the product  that everyone else is offering and The Radiator Gallery seemed to have a massive range for us to choose from. We looked at various suppliers, mainly over the internet and they seemed to have the biggest selection and certainly had a very good range.

The designer radiators are like works of art aren’t they?

They really are, some more than others. There are some phenomenal radiators, they’re great.

Do you see them as part of your interior design?

Absolutely, the thing that struck me most after we did the refurbishment was the amount of people and customers and guests who commented on radiators. I didn’t think it was even possible for anyone to notice a radiator.

What type of things did they say about them?

How they really like the radiators and they’re pretty modern. It’s strange that radiators could cause such a stir. The style we chose was Arc . We chose an Arc chrome single row.

And the radiators played a big part in the hotel’s refurbishment?

Everything in the room got changed. We refurbished the whole room and everything got stripped out. We wanted to make it a little bit funky and a little bit different and the price was great for such a good looking radiator and they really look a lot more expensive than they were. We have them in 40 bedrooms and we liked them so much we’ve put them in various corridors and public areas as well.

Could underground water heat designer radiators?

Designer Radiators could soon be powered by hot water lurking more than a mile below the Earth’s surface.

Geologists believe radiators in thousands of homes could be fuelled this way.

The findings have been made by a team from Newcastle University after they started drilling at the former site of the city’s Scottish and Newcastle Brewery .

The scientists discovered water in sandstone that had been warmed to 42C by naturally occurring radiation found in granite. They hope to continue to 6,500ft, where the temperature is expected to nearly double to 82C.

The water couldn’t be put into heating systems directly as it has a high salt content. If the scheme, which could provide enough energy to heat around 11,000 nearby homes, went ahead, its geothermal energy would be harvested and used to warm clean water.

Although the initial investment is expensive, the environmentally friendly source would be expected to be substantially cheaper than traditional fossil fuels in the long-term.

Past, Present and Future with Designer Radiators

The worlds of art, design and imagination have always been able to span the ages, simultaneously capable of backwards and forwards compatibility. Designer radiators can bring that same wonderful versatility to the part of interior design that not only keeps your houses and offices warm, but makes them look good too!

Technology of course plays a part, and its advancement allows designers to experiment and create, deciphering and unlocking the code to what makes a good designer radiator. For the buyer, however, it would appear that the world is indeed their oyster, or at the very least their designer radiators could be oyster shaped!

Recreating the past, visualising the future or just luxuriating in the contemporary, your home’s interior can be almost anything you want it to be, a bold statement of intent or a subtle hint of suggestion. Toying with shape and structure, calculating angles and contours and dreaming up new ways of expressing your mind through interior design can be an exhilarating process of trial and error.

For those who enjoy wallowing in the freedom of design and creation, “keeping up with the Joneses” is just something for everyone else to pursue.

Designer radiators are “art”, says interior expert

Designer Radiators have come a long way in the past 15 years.  Gone are the bland white radiators – they’re now a must have and affordable accessory for many people renovating their homes or office space.

Interior Design Architect Alex Simpson said they are like pieces of art and work well in any environment.

“Rather than have just the big, ugly rad under the window where it’s function with very little form [it’s moved on]. It’s something radiator manufacturers have looked into and said ‘Well look these are things that people need but what can we do to make them a little bit more interesting’.

A radiator as we know is something that heats your house but in a lot of cases….it’s a big white block against the wall or under the window and it’s a necessary evil. They don’t look very nice.”

However, Dublin based Mr Simpson credits London- based The Radiator Gallery for rejuvenating this product.

“Companies like The Radiator Gallery have taken the next step and said let’s try and work with the design community and give them something that’s pleasing to the eye.

If you want to put something in a museum, an office, a reception area where you want a wow factor, this could’ve been ruined by a big bland radiator sitting in the corner but those things have changed, you could maybe make a feature out of it. I see it as a good step,” he said.

Alex Simpson has used designer radiators in his projects and has said he would again.

“On a reception area we had a long vertical space on a wall and we needed to heat the area so the ideal was to put a radiator which was nearly two metres long. It was done in a silver finish and it just worked very well as a piece of sculpture.”

In the current economic climate more and more people are spending on their homes rather than moving on.

One of the most popular interior design trends of the last few years is the designer radiator.

These fully functioning central heating systems can be ultra modern, personalised or updated versions of the old Victorian radiators.

Interior Design Architect Alex Simpson said they are like pieces of art and work well in the home or in businesses.

“Rather than having just the big, ugly rad under the window where it’s about function with very little form [it’s moved on]. It’s something radiator manufacturers have looked into and said ‘Well look these are things that people need but what can we do to make them a little bit more interesting’.

“A radiator as we know is something that heats your house but in a lot of cases you get somebody in who puts the rads in.  It’s a big white block against the wall or under the window and it’s a necessary evil. They don’t look very nice.”

Leading the way in the industry is London based The Radiator Gallery.  Visitors coming into the shop could be forgiven for thinking they’ve stumbled into the capital’s newest Art Gallery, so varied and magnificent are the pieces.

Alex Simpson believes they are leading the way in interior design .

So spectacular are the pieces by artists such as Karim Rashid and Michael Cinier that  many customers forget that they have a purpose and can also heat their rooms.

Susan Jordan, owner of The Radiator Gallery said visitors are always impressed with their designs.

“People come into the shop and browse around, they genuinely can’t believe how many different radiators we have to buy.”
